Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, a former presidential aide, has expressed concerns about disturbing reports regarding foreign interference in Nigeria’s political processes, especially regarding the choice of a vice-presidential candidate in upcoming elections.
In an interview with Channels Television, Baba-Ahmed mentioned claims that the United States had advised President Bola Tinubu on the religious background of his potential running mate. These claims suggest that the president was warned against selecting another Muslim and was instead encouraged to choose a Christian.
Baba-Ahmed found these allegations hard to believe and described them as shocking, particularly for those familiar with Nigeria’s past political landscape. He worries that the country may have reached a point where foreign entities are thought to have a say in critical personal and constitutional issues.
He criticized the notion that outside powers could transition from security involvement to influencing leadership decisions based on religious affiliations. Baba-Ahmed cautioned that permitting such interference, whether real or perceived, threatens Nigeria’s dignity and autonomy.
He emphasized that the decision regarding a vice president should solely be the responsibility of Nigeria’s elected officials and citizens, free from external influences or religious biases.
