How Many Mosques Exist In Non-Muslim Areas, Yet In Sokoto You Will Find A Very Big Church -Asari Dokubo

In a Facebook video posted on January 21, 2026, Niger Delta activist and Kalabari chieftain Asari Dokubo addressed the topic of religious coexistence and tolerance in Nigeria, highlighting the imbalanced narratives regarding faith and the public sphere.

Dokubo pointed out, “How many mosques exist in non-Muslim areas, yet in Sokoto you will find a very big church,” to illustrate his argument that Muslims in Nigeria have shown more tolerance for religious diversity than often recognized. He argued that areas typically viewed as Muslim-majority have historically welcomed churches and Christian communities without conflict.

He clarified that his comments were not aimed at inciting division but at challenging what he perceives as selective outrage in religious discourse. Dokubo insisted that discussions about marginalization should be based on facts and mutual respect rather than emotions or political agendas.

The former militant leader added that Nigeria’s history is rich with examples of peaceful coexistence, particularly in northern states where Christian worship facilities operate freely. He emphasized that acknowledging this truth is vital for alleviating suspicion and rebuilding trust among religious groups.

Dokubo warned that overstating claims of exclusion or dominance could exacerbate tensions during a period when Nigeria faces insecurity and economic challenges. He asserted that religion should not be exploited for political gain or used to rationalize hostility.

He believes national unity can only be maintained if Nigerians recognize each other’s rights and freedoms, irrespective of faith. He called upon religious leaders and politicians to moderate rhetoric that could further divide the country.

Dokubo concluded by stating that Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity and that safeguarding the freedom of worship for all is crucial for maintaining peace, stability, and coexistence throughout the nation.
