Prof. ‎Odinkalu Reacts To Report Of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu Sharing Uniform To Schoolchildren

In a recent post on his official X account, human rights lawyer and public affairs commentator Chidi Anselm Odinkalu critiqued an initiative connected to Senator Orji Uzor Kalu regarding schoolchildren in Abia North.

Odinkalu stated, “Now that we called for #RetireOUK, efulefu wants to act like the father of every schoolchild in Abia North? I’m pleased he’s helping our tailors. Next year, we will #RetireOUK; he’s taken enough and caused more harm,” in response to reports that the former governor of Abia State was involved in providing school uniforms to local students.

He expressed that this action was not a genuine attempt to support education but rather a political maneuver amid increasing demands for Kalu to leave public office. Odinkalu suggested that this gesture was a strategy to improve Kalu’s public image during a time of dissatisfaction.

He argued that such symbolic acts fail to address the fundamental issues of governance and accountability that affect both the state and the nation. According to Odinkalu, the initiative seemed designed to portray Kalu as a benefactor to families, rather than fulfilling his responsibilities as a public official tasked with delivering sustainable development. He indicated that the newfound focus on schoolchildren was likely a response to ongoing public pressure for political reform.

Odinkalu reiterated that calls for Kalu’s political retirement would persist, expressing confidence that demands for accountability would intensify in the coming year. He criticized the former governor for inflicting long-term damage on institutions and public trust during his tenure, asserting that no charitable acts could undo the negative consequences of his past actions on the state’s progress.
