A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Rivers State and chairman of a major faction of the party, Emeka Beke, has reacted to the ongoing impeachment proceedings in the state, calling for calm and prioritisation of peace.
Beke made the remarks during an interview on News Central Television on Thursday, January 8, 2026, as political tension continues to escalate in Rivers State following actions by the State House of Assembly. Speaking on the situation, Beke distanced the crisis from the legislature, pointing instead to deeper political undercurrents.
“This whole thing that is playing out is not playing out because of the Assembly. That’s where this whole thing is coming up from,” he said. He stressed that the overriding concern at this moment should be stability in the state rather than assigning blame. “And what I need to make people understand that right now, River State needs peace in this state. That is just the most important thing,” Beke stated.
According to him, the political crisis should not be reduced to issues of right and wrong. “It’s not about who has got it wrong and who is right, but River State needs peace. We need peace in our state,” he said. Beke warned against the state becoming a recurring flashpoint for political unrest. “I think River State is not the only state in this country. We have a lot of other states in this country. River State won’t create one problem today, one problem tomorrow,” he said.
Reacting to claims of agreements involving the President, Beke said he was not part of any such discussions. “Like, I listened to the speaker, where he said they had an accord with Mr. President. I’m not part of the accord meeting they had in Abuja,” he stated. He, however, emphasized that the interest of Rivers State should supersede all political considerations. “But the most important, they should know that River State is first,” Beke added.
Questioning the basis of the allegations fueling the crisis, he raised concerns about reported benefits allegedly received by lawmakers. “And what allegation are you talking about? Some people are saying we are just complaining. Some of them just got a brand new SUV, and some of them got over 200 million naira,” he said.
When asked who provided the vehicles and funds, Beke responded directly. “Ibas gave them. Ibas was the sole administrator of River State. He gave them SUV, and gave them 200 million per assembly member,” he said. He questioned the rationale behind the lawmakers’ grievances. “Why are they complaining? Are they the only people in River State?” Beke asked.
He urged political actors to engage in dialogue rather than escalate tensions. “If they really believe in this state, there’s nothing they cannot be able to sit down and discuss,” he said. Beke concluded by calling for selflessness among leaders. “But I think that we must be able to think about River State, not about personal individual right now we’re talking about,” he added.
