According to a report by Daily Post on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, the Member representing Apa/Agatu Federal Constituency and Chairman of the House Committee on National Inland Waterways, Chief Hon. Pastor Ojotu Ojema, has warned that meaningful and sustainable development will remain unattainable in Agatu Local Government Area without lasting peace and security.
Ojema made the statement on Monday, December 29, 2025, while speaking as the guest speaker at the Agatu Peace and Unity Festival in Makurdi, the Benue State capital.
The festival brought together community leaders, youth groups, and residents to deliberate on ways to promote harmony and cooperation in the region.
During his lecture titled “The Place of Peace in Sociopolitical Development,” Ojema emphasized the critical role of peace in driving economic growth, social progress, and political stability.
He noted that persistent insecurity in Agatu has hindered development projects and discouraged investment, stressing that communities cannot thrive when fear and conflict dominate daily life.
According to him, lasting peace is the foundation upon which any meaningful progress can be built, and without it, efforts by government and community leaders are unlikely to yield sustainable results.
“Our land has been engulfed by war for too long, from both internal and external aggressions. We have tried as leaders, yet the carnage continues,” Ojema said.
He highlighted the destructive impact of ongoing violence on families, schools, and local businesses, calling attention to the need for collective action to prevent further loss.
Ojema urged both traditional and religious leaders to work closely with government authorities to mediate disputes and create mechanisms for early conflict resolution.
Ojema also addressed the role of individuals who profit from instability, condemning them for undermining peace efforts.
He stressed that those who benefit from conflict contribute to prolonged suffering and slow development.
The lawmaker encouraged community members to reject violence, engage in dialogue, and support initiatives that promote reconciliation and unity.
He emphasized that lasting peace requires a combined effort from all sectors of society.
The federal lawmaker pointed out that education and youth engagement are essential for sustaining peace.
He suggested that programs targeting young people, including vocational training and community service, can reduce susceptibility to violence and foster a culture of cooperation.
Ojema highlighted examples from neighboring communities where youth involvement in peacebuilding initiatives had led to reduced conflicts and improved social cohesion.
Ojema concluded by reiterating that Agatu’s future depends on a commitment to peace.
He called on residents, leaders, and government officials to prioritize security measures and community-based initiatives.
