Bandits And Terrorists Are Mobile; They Move Around, So You Can’t Kill Them With Bombardment -Gumi

Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has argued that the recent United States airstrikes in Nigeria cannot effectively eliminate mobile bandits and terrorists operating in the country’s forests.

In an interview with Daily Trust, Sheikh Gumi expressed concerns about Nigeria’s sovereignty and questioned the military value of the operation. “We have a lot of educated people in Nigeria, both in the north and the south, and people have come out to speak. I don’t think, except for the gullible Nigerians, nobody’s really happy about this issue. It’s about sovereignty. The sovereignty of Nigeria is raped by this attack. It doesn’t have any military significance,” he stated.

The cleric explained why he believes aerial bombardments are ineffective against insurgents. “Bandits and terrorists that are mobile and they move around from one place to another, so you can’t kill them with bombardment. Bombardment will only kill innocent people. As we have seen how bombs have been scattered all over the nation, and these bombs, you see, they are not as precise—or they are not precision bombs as they claim. It causes more damage to civilians than to people in the bush. And they are also good at targeting buildings, high-rise buildings. And in the forest, terrorists don’t use high-rise buildings,” he said.

Sheikh Gumi warned that such foreign military interventions pose more dangers than benefits to Nigeria. He praised the federal government’s domestic security initiatives, including the creation of forest guards and state police, calling them significant advances in achieving security.

However, he expressed frustration that these local improvements are being undermined by external intrusions, noting that the government had been making progress even before the American strikes occurred.
