According to an IRNA News Agency report of Thursday 25 of December 2025, Iran’s top nuclear official, Mohammad Eslami, has said that Western opposition to the Islamic Republic is rooted not in concerns over nuclear weapons, but in resistance to Iran’s growing scientific and technological capabilities.
Eslami, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), made the remarks on Tuesday while addressing a joint meeting of Iran’s nuclear medicine, radio-oncology, hematology and oncology associations. He described nuclear science as a key engine of national development and strength, stressing its role in advancing healthcare and scientific independence.
According to Eslami, Iran is committed to advancing at the highest levels of scientific knowledge. He said that nuclear sciences and related technologies have historically been controlled by a small number of powerful states, despite their broad civilian and medical applications.
“The real problem they have with us is our presence at this level and in this arena,” he said.
Eslami emphasized that closer co-operation among Iranian specialists could ease public suffering, particularly in the medical field, while accelerating scientific and clinical progress. He pointed to Iran’s achievements in nuclear medicine and cancer treatment as examples of how domestic expertise directly benefits society.
Reflecting on Iran’s scientific trajectory, Eslami said that the country had reached its current position independently, despite external pressure. He credited young Iranian scientists and the guidance of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, for sustaining long-term scientific objectives.
“Administrations come and go with different policies, but this goal-setting remains constant,” he added.
Eslami also said that recent regional conflicts had revealed what he described as the pretext behind longstanding allegations against Iran’s nuclear program. Referring to discussions at the United Nations Security Council and statements by Britain, France and Germany, he argued that Western powers are primarily focused on slowing Iran’s development.
“If one pays attention to the recent UN Security Council meeting and the remarks by officials of the three European countries, it becomes clear that the main objective is to stop Iran’s progress,” he said.
He further cited Israeli missile attacks on Isfahan, saying that the first site targeted was a facility producing radiopharmaceutical fuel. According to Eslami, this showed hostility toward technologies with direct humanitarian and medical value.
Without domestic nuclear medicine capabilities, he warned, Iran’s healthcare system would face serious shortages, as “they would not provide these materials.”
Eslami also referred to a recently released United States (US) national security document, noting that artificial intelligence, quantum technology and nuclear science were identified as foundations of future progress. “If these are necessary for the US, they must be for other countries as well,” he added.
