Former presidential candidate, Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has expressed confidence that Nigeria’s political landscape will not be reduced to a one-party dominance, drawing parallels with key moments in the country’s democratic history.
Speaking on Thursday, December 18, 2025, Hashim stated that attempts to sideline major opposition parties would ultimately fail, just as similar efforts have collapsed in the past. He stressed that Nigeria’s democracy has consistently shown the capacity to resist political control by a single group.
According to him, the forces that prevented the late military ruler, General Sani Abacha, from transforming his self-succession ambition into reality would again come into play. Hashim recalled how Abacha, during the 1990s, attempted to emerge as the sole presidential candidate through all registered political parties, a move that was eventually blocked.
He emphasized that such schemes have historically been defeated through internal resistance by Nigerians themselves, rather than external intervention. In his view, the country’s political system has repeatedly proven resilient whenever faced with attempts to concentrate power.
Hashim also warned against current strategies aimed at weakening opposition platforms or creating a political environment where only the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) remains dominant. He maintained that efforts to eliminate strong alternatives in the political space would not succeed.
In his concluding remarks, the former presidential candidate reiterated his belief that Nigeria’s democratic history offers clear lessons, noting that past failures of power-monopolizing agendas serve as a reminder that similar plans are unlikely to endure.
According to THE SUN, he said; “The same God that granted us the grace to witness the collapse of the Abacha plot will also help us see the end of the APC-or-no-other-party agenda.
