Kenneth Okonkwo, a renowned legal practitioner has raised serious concerns over the recent ruling declared by the Supreme Court regarding the president’s power to declare a state of emergency and suspend governors. According to his statements which were shared by ChannelsTv on their official X handle, he pointed out that he do not know the paragraph in the constitution which the ruling was derived from.
Many were left stunned after the supreme court ruled that the president has the authority and power to declare a state of emergency and depose sitting governors amid the controversies that trailed the declaration in Rivers State.
It can be recalled that the pronouncement in Rivers State, which led to the suspension of governor Siminalayi Fubara, deposition of state lawmakers and democratic institutions sparked massive public debate.
However, the recent ruling delivered by the supreme court added another twist to the debacle, with many viewing it as a step in the wrong direction, a viewpoint upheld by Kenneth Okonkwo, a respected legal practitioner during a recent interview on ChannelsTv.
According to his statements which were shared by ChannelsTv on their official X handle, he pointed out that the part of the constitution which the supreme court ruled from was unknown to him and many others.
“How can a court rule and quote a constitution that I don’t know the paragraph and section they cited?” He asked.
The remarks from Kenneth Okonkwo, which resonated with many, indicated that not many were pleased with the landmark ruling.
