Tell Him To Perish The Thought; You’re Not Going To Become IGP – Omoyele Sowore Tells Jimoh Moshood

Nigerian activist and 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has publicly criticized Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Jimoh Moshood, over his alleged ambition to become the next Inspector General of Police (IGP). The remarks were made in a video clip aired by SYMFONI TV and widely circulated online on Tuesday, December 9, 2025.

Sowore made the statement while addressing the unresolved Oworonshoki case, a matter that has continued to spark public outcry due to concerns over accountability and law enforcement transparency.

According to the activist, Moshood is allegedly leveraging political loyalty to advance his career within the police hierarchy, attempting to secure the position of IGP by winning favor with President Bola Tinubu and the current IGP.

In the video, Sowore dismissed Moshood’s alleged aspirations outright, warning that he should abandon the idea entirely. “Tell him to perish the thought; you’re not going to become IGP,” Sowore stated emphatically.

He argued that no amount of flattery, networking, or political maneuvering could guarantee the top police job, particularly while unresolved and controversial cases like Oworonshoki continue to cast a shadow over his professional record.

Sowore stressed that appointments within the Nigerian Police Force should be based on merit, integrity, and commitment to public service rather than political calculations.

He accused Moshood of prioritizing personal ambition over justice and proper law enforcement, asserting that such maneuvering erodes public trust and undermines the credibility of the police institution.

The activist also used the moment to call on the federal government to ensure transparency and accountability in police appointments. He highlighted that the Nigerian public deserves leaders who are committed to upholding the law, protecting citizens, and delivering justice, rather than those pursuing personal advancement at the expense of institutional integrity.

Sowore’s intervention has sparked significant debate online, with Nigerians taking to social media to weigh in on the allegations. While some have applauded the activist for calling out perceived political scheming within the police hierarchy, others argue that such public statements risk further politicizing the security apparatus.
