Retired Major-General John Enenche has downplayed fears that the attempted coup in neighbouring Benin Republic could inspire similar actions in Nigeria.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Enenche insisted that Nigeria’s political and security structures make such an event nearly impossible.
Reacting to the failed coup attempt, which recently unsettled the West African nation, Enenche said the Nigerian system is layered with safeguards that would make any unconstitutional takeover extremely difficult. He also noted that Nigeria’s armed forces have, over the years, demonstrated strong commitment to democratic governance, professionalism and adherence to constitutional order.
“I’m not too worried that it can happen in Nigeria. It’s impossible for me, I stand to be corrected,” he said, stressing that while the region continues to experience pockets of instability, Nigeria remains insulated due to its established democratic processes and the structure of its security institutions.
Enenche explained that Nigeria’s size, diversity and complex national security architecture make it fundamentally different from smaller nations where coups are more easily coordinated. He added that the military has undergone decades of reforms geared towards strengthening civil–military relations and reinforcing the principle of civilian control.
He further noted that the early detection systems and intelligence networks within Nigeria’s defence and security services significantly reduce the chances of such plots going unnoticed. According to him, even in moments of political tension, the armed forces have consistently demonstrated restraint and loyalty to constituted authority.
