According to a report by Punch Newspapers on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, the Senate on Wednesday began the screening of former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa (retd.), who was nominated by President Bola Tinubu to serve as the next Minister of Defence.
The session marked one of the most anticipated moments of the day, as lawmakers questioned the retired general on Nigeria’s current security challenges and the role he intends to play if confirmed.
Musa used the opportunity to state his readiness to strengthen national defence structures and restore confidence in the armed forces.
During the screening, Musa assured the Senate that his years of military experience had prepared him to take on the responsibility of improving security across the country.
He noted that he remains committed to working closely with all relevant security agencies to address the growing threats confronting the nation.
According to him, the problems facing the country require discipline, cooperation, and a clear sense of purpose from those tasked with defending Nigeria.
General Musa also stressed the importance of deepening professionalism within the armed forces.
He stated that the military must continuously improve its conduct, coordination, and operational standards to meet the demands of modern security challenges.
Musa explained that such improvements would help the armed forces respond more effectively to emergencies, protect vulnerable communities, and ensure that criminals are prevented from gaining ground anywhere in the country.
In his remarks, the defence minister nominee highlighted that the military would maintain a firm position against terrorism and other forms of violent crime.
He stated that security agencies must take timely and decisive action whenever threats emerge.
Musa added that a collective and well-organized approach involving various ministries, departments, and agencies is necessary to ensure that investigations, intelligence gathering, and response operations are carried out seamlessly.
Musa ended his session by restating his commitment to national security and his determination to contribute to stabilizing the country.
He explained that he would focus on strengthening cooperation among security institutions and improving communication within the defence sector.
He said, “I want to assure Nigerians that we will not stand by and see terrorists have the capacity to do such. We are going to go after them, working with all the security agencies and MDAs, we are going to investigate fully.”
