According to a report by Leadership News on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, Shehu Sani, former Kaduna Central Senator, said Nigeria should not face prolonged insecurity despite its large population and resources.
He stated that a nation with an estimated 230 million people should not be struggling against a few thousand armed groups.
He made the remarks while discussing the persistent security challenges affecting many communities.
Shehu Sani, former Kaduna Central Senator, explained that banditry in the northern region remains a major concern that requires honest assessment.
He called on political and traditional leaders in the region to approach the problem with sincerity and commitment.
He stressed that insecurity cannot be addressed effectively if leaders fail to recognise the true nature of the crisis.
Shehu Sani, former Kaduna Central Senator, noted that the issue of banditry is tied to internal factors rather than external influences.
He said the crisis has grown over the years because the northern region has not fully confronted the roots of the problem.
He maintained that banditry did not emerge from outside Nigeria but developed within local communities that have been affected by economic hardship and weak security structures.
Shehu Sani, former Kaduna Central Senator, said the crisis requires a regional strategy involving cooperation among states in the North-West and North-East.
He added that the challenge cannot be resolved through isolated efforts by individual states.
According to him, a coordinated approach is necessary to curb the activities of armed groups and restore stability.
Shehu Sani, former Kaduna Central Senator, emphasised the need for leaders to acknowledge the identities and backgrounds of those involved in the attacks.
He stated that many of the individuals responsible for banditry come from communities in the northern region.
He explained that the problem should not be attributed to neighbouring countries or external actors, as doing so diverts attention from the real issues.
Shehu Sani, former Kaduna Central Senator, said the establishment of the Northern Security Trust Fund represents an important step toward improving security.
He described the initiative as a measure that should have been introduced earlier to support security agencies and provide resources for operations.
He stated that such a fund can enhance regional security efforts if managed properly.
Shehu Sani, former Kaduna Central Senator, added that the situation demands collective responsibility from leaders and citizens in the northern region.
He urged them to work together to reduce the influence of armed groups and to strengthen local institutions.
He maintained that acknowledging responsibility is necessary for the region to overcome the challenges and build a more secure environment.
He said, “The bandits are from the northern parts of Nigeria. From the North-West are Fulanis, and the North-East are Kanuris. I don’t believe it when people say they are from Mali or Burkina Faso.
