Dr. Ikechukwu Egbonu, a bishop with the Anglican Church, recently shared his experience after visiting Nnamdi Kanu in Sokoto Prison. Before meeting him, Egbonu admitted he expected to see someone harsh or aggressive because of the many stories surrounding Kanu. Instead, he met a man whose calmness and friendliness came as a complete surprise.
In a video shared by Signature TV, Egbonu explained that Kanu was in a positive mood and showed no signs of anger or bitterness. During their conversation, Kanu encouraged him not to worry and asked that people outside remain peaceful. He did not want his supporters to react with violence or take the law into their own hands. According to Egbonu, Kanu felt that any violent action would only make people believe negative things about his supporters and worsen the situation.
The bishop also noted how well Kanu related with the prison officers. He observed that many of them had grown fond of him because of his respectful and approachable behavior. Egbonu said he learned that even during his time in DSS custody, Kanu had been well-liked by many officers due to his calm nature.
Meeting Kanu changed Egbonu’s earlier assumptions. He expected someone fierce, but instead found a man who was relaxed, confident, and hopeful. The encounter left him convinced that Kanu was not the violent person some believe him to be, but someone who values peace and wants calm among his supporters.
In his words, “I even thought he was a violent man, that was the first time of seeing him, but when I met him, he was a very calm, cool man.”
