In a video released on SYMFONI, former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan reflected on the evolution of leadership in Nigeria, highlighting the role of young leaders in shaping the nation’s democratic and military history.
Speaking on democracy, Jonathan pointed to the example of former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, who assumed power at a very young age.
“Gowon who was first military head of state was a bachelor. He was not even married the time became head of state. He was 32 going 33 young bachelor,” Jonathan said.
He recalled that during Gowon’s leadership, Nigeria had just 12 states, and he served as the president in his own region.
“He was our president in my state then river state because then Nigeria had 12 states,” Jonathan explained.
Jonathan also highlighted the appointment of young military officers as governors under Gowon’s administration, stressing their competence despite their age.
He noted the case of Rivers State’s military governor at the time, who was equally young but demonstrated remarkable leadership.
“The speed was 24 going 25. They became the military governor of river state but they did very well and that’s one of the things I want to emphasize,” Jonathan stated.
According to him, this period in Nigeria’s history shows that leadership is not solely determined by age but also by dedication and performance.
Jonathan’s remarks underscored the importance of giving opportunities to young people in governance, as the experiences of the past proved that youthfulness did not prevent effectiveness in leadership.
By reflecting on Gowon and his contemporaries, Jonathan emphasized the need for Nigerians to continue appreciating the contributions of young leaders who, despite their limited years, played vital roles in the unity and governance of the country.
