Political activist Joe Igbokwe has shared a deeply personal and heart-wrenching account of losing his father to armed groups in Southeast Nigeria. In a moving Facebook post, Igbokwe revealed that his 70-year-old father was abducted and killed by UGM and IPOB on September 7, 2023. The tragic event has left him and his family unable to lay his father to rest, compounding their grief.
In his post, Igbokwe described the circumstances that led to his father’s death. A man who spent his life as a civil servant in Abuja, his father had always been generous to young people in his community, providing money and food. Tragically, some of these same youths, allegedly linked to UGM and IPOB, became the perpetrators of his death. “They killed him because he opposed them,” Igbokwe wrote, emphasizing that his father’s only “offense” was advising them to desist from violent acts.
Igbokwe recounted the trauma and brutality his father endured, stating that even in spiritual encounters he could sense the torture his father suffered. He expressed profound pain at not being allowed to see his father’s body or receive closure. “They threw me away and never allowed me to see his face,” he said, sharing the psychological scars left by this violent act.
