Prophet Isa El-Buba, the outspoken leader of El-Buba Outreach Ministries International and convener of the Initiative for Better and Brighter Nigeria has criticized Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia for denying that his state is suffering a genocide.
El-Buba who has been an active voice in national conversations about religious violence and insecurity, did not mince words in a viral tweet saying, “Dear Benue State Government, You may deny it publicly, but the mass graves, displaced families, and burning villages tell the truth. Genocide isn’t erased by a press statement. Benue is bleeding, and the world can see it.”
The governor, in public remarks, has rejected allegations that the violence in Benue qualifies as genocide, framing the conflict instead as a long-running farmer-herder crisis. But for El-Buba, such statements are a dangerous dismissal of mounting evidence of atrocity. He argues that whatever public relations efforts the government makes, they cannot conceal the “mass graves, displaced families, and burning villages” that, in his words, testify to the scale of human tragedy.
El-Buba’s rallying cry reflects a broader frustration among religious and civil society leaders, who contend that the killings in Benue and other Middle Belt states go beyond episodic clashes. In his other public interventions, the prophet has claimed that thousands of Christians have been killed in Nigeria, calling on the federal government to treat the violence as a genocide.
Last June, he led a protest in Abuja demanding urgent action to end attacks on Benue communities. His persistent activism has put a spotlight on what many see as the government’s inaction and denial.
