According to a report by Channels Television on Thursday, November 20, 2025, Catholic Bishop of the Makurdi Diocese, Wilfred Anagbe warned members of the United States Congress that the situation in Nigeria has deteriorated sharply despite the recent redesignation of the country as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) by the US President Donald Trump.
Bishop Anagbe said: “We hoped the CPC designation by President Trump at the end of October might stabilize the situation, but instead it is deteriorating into one of the most lethal periods for Nigerian Christians in recent memory.” He said global observers have acknowledged Nigeria as one of the most dangerous places for followers of the Christian faith: “Like it is now commonly acknowledged, Nigeria remains the deadliest place on earth to be a Christian. More believers are killed there annually than in the rest of the world combined.”
The bishop accused the Nigerian government of failing to hold perpetrators accountable: “Yet, perpetrators face little accountability and the Nigerian government’s response since the CPC designation is to unleash vainglorious speakers and willy-tos to spin the narrative and make false equivalences about Muslim deaths.” He challenged the government’s framing of the crisis, questioning claims of religious balance in casualty reports: “But I would like to ask the question here, who is killing the Muslims up north? Is there any Christian militia displacing millions and occupying lands in Nigeria?”
According to Bishop Anagbe, lack of decisive intervention from authorities has worsened public despair: “The government of Nigeria’s silence and refusal to engage in the fates of continued killings and displacements has deepened feelings of abandonment among the people.” He added that national leaders appear disconnected from the scale of the crisis: “The national leadership appears disengaged, treating the Christian genocide reports as a non-issue instead of considering it a national emergency.” He warned that the government’s posture is damaging confidence in state institutions: “This lack of political will undermines trust in government institutions and fuels perceptions of complicity or indifference.
