According to Channels tv, Kebbi State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Halima Bande, has confirmed that the two schoolgirls who managed to escape from the bandits—Salma and Hauwa’u Imam—are back home and safe. The announcement brought a brief moment of relief amid the ongoing anxiety surrounding the abduction of dozens of students in the state.
According to the commissioner, the girls returned on Monday after successfully fleeing from the bandits during the chaotic movement deeper into the forest. Bande revealed that the two teenagers exhibited remarkable courage, taking advantage of a moment of distraction among the attackers to escape. They reportedly wandered for hours before finding help from local vigilantes who immediately alerted authorities.
“Salma and Hauwa’u Imam are back and safe. They have been reunited with their families and are receiving necessary care,” Bande said during a press briefing. She noted that medical personnel and trauma counselors have been assigned to support the girls, as both are still shaken by the harrowing experience.
The commissioner expressed gratitude to local vigilante groups, community leaders, and security personnel who played critical roles in locating and securing the return of the girls. She described their escape as a “ray of hope” in an otherwise distressing situation.

However, Bande reminded the public that 24 students remain in captivity, stressing that the government is intensifying efforts to rescue them. She assured parents and the broader community that multiple security teams—including military units, police, and intelligence operatives—have been deployed to comb the forests and track the movement of the abductors.
Family members of Salma and Hauwa’u have expressed relief and gratitude, though their joy is tempered by the reality that many other families are still waiting for their children. One relative said the girls arrived exhausted and traumatized but emotionally strong enough to share details that could assist ongoing rescue operations.
