A prominent figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has condemned a comment attributed to Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, in which the cleric allegedly claimed that Christians in the Middle Belt stage false burials using empty coffins to fabricate claims of genocide.
Fani-Kayode issued his response on Monday, November 17, 2025, through a statement on his official X account, reacting to a report published by The Guardian. The newspaper had earlier quoted Gumi as making the controversial assertion shortly after the United States government classified Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” and warned of possible military measures should attacks on Christians persist.
In his reaction, Fani-Kayode described Gumi’s remarks as deeply insensitive. He stressed that the reality in Nigeria is that Christian communities have suffered relentless violence at the hands of extremist groups. According to him, the pattern of killings across the country shows that terrorists do not discriminate, targeting people of different ethnicities and faiths.
Fani-Kayode wrote on X that dismissing the killings or suggesting that Christians stage burials is “a wicked and outrageous falsehood,” adding that Christians have indeed been murdered in significant numbers across Nigeria.
