Olusegun Obasanjo recounted how former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose ensured his attendance at his birthday celebration. Speaking in a Symfoni TV interview, Obasanjo described the lengths Fayose went to, demonstrating respect and political awareness despite past disagreements.
Obasanjo noted that although Fayose had previously abused him, those past conflicts did not diminish his accomplishments. He emphasized that achievements in public service should be recognized, even by political rivals.
The former president explained that Fayose did not approach him directly. Instead, he sent a representative, Osita, to deliver the invitation. Obasanjo initially questioned the indirect approach but accepted the message once it was delivered, noting that such a method can still convey sincerity and respect in political matters.
By sharing this story, Obasanjo showed the importance of acknowledging accomplishments regardless of past conflicts. He highlighted that respect and recognition should transcend political differences and that milestones such as birthday celebrations can serve as opportunities to celebrate achievements and maintain civility.
In his words: “You are not the best of my political children. You are not, but you have made achievement that must not be ignored because even to get me to come to this you couldn’t approach me directly; you sent Osita to come and find me out. You couldn’t come direct, and when Osita came, I said, who also is a political child? I said, well, if he has sent you and you have delivered the message, then say to him that you have delivered the message. And then you phoned me, and I said, Ayo, who? And you said, Ayo Fayose. I said, yes, you can see me any time.
