Sheik Gumi: If Such Mass Staging Truly Occurred, Who Dug The Graves? Who Carried The Coffins? – PFN

A report by Vanguard Newspapers on Saturday, November 15, 2025, states that the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) has dismissed comments made by Islamic cleric Sheik Ahmad Gumi, who suggested that Christians in the Middle Belt are holding funerals to fabricate a narrative of genocide. The PFN labeled these remarks as insensitive, irresponsible, and morally wrong, raising concerns about the influence of such statements on public perception and community relations.

Gumi accused Christians of burying empty coffins to exaggerate the violence in the area, but PFN officials condemned this claim as unfounded and inflammatory. They pointed out that the claim fails to stand up to scrutiny and contradicts the reality of the violence and insecurity in the Middle Belt.

The fellowship questioned the feasibility of Gumi’s allegations, pointing to practical contradictions. They argued that if mass staging were occurring, there would be significant logistical challenges, including who dug the graves, transported the coffins, and documented the incidents. They further noted that no witness has ever come forward to corroborate these actions, undermining the credibility of the accusation.

PFN highlighted that Nigeria has suffered considerable losses from terrorism and banditry, with many genuine victims in affected communities. They emphasized that spreading unverified and inflammatory claims can misrepresent the suffering of families who have lost loved ones and escalate tensions between religious and community groups.

The statement raised practical questions regarding the alleged mass staging and called on leaders to be responsible in their public comments, especially concerning sensitive issues of violence and security. PFN reiterated its commitment to aiding victims of violence and fostering unity, understanding, and dialogue among different religious communities in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, urging public figures to refrain from statements that could exacerbate existing conflicts.
