Nigerian security expert and convener of the Katsina Security Community Initiative, Dr. Bashir U. Kurfi, has criticized government officials for engaging in peace talks with armed bandits, describing the practice as irresponsible and dangerous.
In an interview with DAILY TRUST on Saturday, November 15, 2025, Dr. Kurfi said the so-called peace deals are not genuine efforts to end violence but rather acts of submission to criminal groups.
He argued that allowing armed individuals to sit at negotiation tables reflects a failure of leadership and a disregard for the rule of law.
He referenced a recent statement by Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who questioned the morality of engaging with individuals responsible for murder and rape.
Kurfi stated, “So, when you talk of the peace deal, I see it as an intimidation by the bandits or an act of surrender. It is a problem like what Okonjo Iweala said yesterday. She said if not irresponsibility, how can officials of the government sit and be negotiating with murderers and rapists and they are coming with their guns? Now, this is not tenable anywhere in the world.”
