According to a report by Vanguard Newspapers on Saturday, November 15, 2025, the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) has condemned statements made by Islamic cleric Sheik Ahmad Gumi suggesting that Christians in the Middle Belt are staging funerals to fabricate claims of genocide.
The Christian organization described the remarks as insensitive, irresponsible, and morally unacceptable, highlighting the seriousness of ongoing tensions in the region.
PFN officials noted that Gumi’s allegation, which claimed that Christians were burying empty coffins to create a false narrative of mass killings, is baseless and inflammatory.
According to the fellowship, the claim does not hold up under scrutiny and contradicts the reality of the security challenges faced by communities in the Middle Belt.
The Christian body emphasized that Nigeria has experienced widespread violence in recent years, with numerous victims of terrorism and banditry across the region.
PFN highlighted that the suggestion of fabricated casualties undermines the suffering of families who have genuinely lost loved ones and fails to acknowledge the ongoing threat posed by armed groups.
In its statement, the PFN expressed concern over the impact of such comments on public discourse.
The fellowship warned that spreading unverified and provocative claims can heighten mistrust between communities and further destabilize areas already affected by violence.
They stressed the importance of careful, responsible communication from public figures on sensitive issues.
They said, “His claim also contradicts itself: Nigeria has witnessed thousands of real victims of terrorism and banditry. There is no need for anyone to “invent” casualties.”
The PFN called on all religious and community leaders to prioritize unity, empathy, and accurate representation of facts.
The organization reaffirmed its commitment to supporting victims of violence and promoting dialogue to foster peace and understanding between different faith groups in Nigeria’s Middle Belt.
