According to a report by Symfoni TV, on Thursday November 13, 2025, General Lucky Irabor (rtd), the former Chief of Defence Staff, has used the controversial example of police brutality in the United States to argue for the unconditional respect of security uniforms in Nigeria, despite instances where officers may misuse their authority.
General Irabor’s comments came during a national dialogue on security and public trust, where he drew a sharp distinction between respecting the symbolism of state authority and challenging individual misconduct.
He referenced scenes of police brutality in the US, where onlookers typically do not physically interfere, arguing that this restraint is born out of respect for the uniform, a culture he believes is necessary in Nigeria.
“Across the world don’t you see even when a police is brutalizing a citizen in USA trying to strangle, do the people around go to hold the officer? No, because the respect the Uniform.”
The former CDS acknowledged that the respect for the uniform does not negate the fact that an officer may be committing an illegal act, stressing that there is an established legal distinction between the two.
“But is he misusing the uniform? Yes. Will he be dealt with? Yes. So let us get a distinction.”
