In an interview on News Central TV, renowned Islamic scholar, Sheikh Dr. Ahmad Abubakar Gumi, has called for fairness and accuracy in reporting the ongoing conflicts in Nigeria’s Middle Belt region.
His remarks come in response to recent statements by U.S. President Donald Trump, who alleged that Christians in Nigeria are facing “genocide” at the hands of Muslims.
Sheikh Gumi rejected the notion that the crisis is one-sided, insisting that it is a complex conflict involving losses on both sides.
He urged Muslims to take proactive steps in documenting and publicizing the names of those who have been killed in the region, emphasizing that transparency is crucial to correcting misconceptions.
In his words, “I think we Muslims, what we need to do now is to bring out to public the names of those who were killed and massacred in the middle belt region. It is mandatory for us now so that the information will not tilt against what is happening. It is two people fighting; it is a case of two-sided fight, both sides having casualty. I wonder if Muslims are killing Christians, I don’t know if there will be any Christians left to be talking to you on TV.”
He further appealed to religious and community leaders across the country to work together in promoting peace and understanding, warning that politicizing or internationalizing the conflict under false narratives could endanger national unity.
