According to a report by Nigerian Tribune on Thursday, October 30, 2025, Dr Valentine Iheukwumere Oparaocha, a chieftain of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has urged Igbos both in Nigeria and in the diaspora to unite behind Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in 2023, as he prepares for the 2027 presidential election.
Oparaocha, speaking to journalists in Minna, said the period calls for the Igbo community to channel their energy toward Obi’s political agenda.
He emphasized the importance of collective support for leadership that could advance the interests of Ndigbo within the Nigerian political landscape.
He cautioned against getting distracted by separatist movements led by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and his followers.
Oparaocha described such efforts as unrealistic and potentially harmful to the unity and progress of the Igbo people.
He encouraged a focus on constructive political engagement instead of divisive agitation.
While acknowledging the ongoing campaign for Nnamdi Kanu’s release, Oparaocha highlighted that revisiting past conflicts is neither practical nor beneficial.
He reflected on the experiences of the Nigerian Civil War, stressing that no rational Igbo person would wish to experience similar suffering again.
Oparaocha pointed out that prominent Igbo leaders had long declared the end of past conflicts, and he questioned the need to revisit them.
He argued that dwelling on historical grievances could divert attention from pressing contemporary political and social priorities.
He further emphasized that supporting a presidential candidate with the potential to influence national policy positively could provide long-term benefits for the Igbo community.
Oparaocha stressed that strategic political participation remains a viable route to securing representation and advancing collective interests.
The chieftain concluded by calling on Igbos to prioritize unity and political engagement in the coming years.
He reiterated that constructive involvement in national politics is a better path to progress than pursuing separatist agendas or rekindling old conflicts.
He said: “Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu told us before his death that the war is over. Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe also said it was over. Why must some people still be dragging us back into what is not possible?…Discover ~ More
