According to report by DAILY TRUST on Wednesday October 29 2025, Hon. Lawan Hussaini Dala criticized the Nigeria Customs Service for an unfair recruitment process, claiming the South-West received most of the slots while the North-West was marginalized. He said this violates the Federal Character principle of equal regional representation.
Dala pointed out that Lagos alone was given over 200 slots, while Kano received just 31. Other North-West states such as Katsina, Jigawa, and Zamfara were also underrepresented. He expressed frustration over the imbalance, stating that it reflects a deliberate attempt to favor one region over others.
According to Dala, such disparities in federal recruitment can deepen regional tensions and erode trust in national institutions. He urged the Federal Character Commission to step in and ensure that future exercises are conducted fairly and transparently.
He called for a review of the current recruitment outcome and demanded that corrective measures be taken to uphold justice and national unity.
He said,
“Lagos alone got 207, Ogun 145, Ondo 132, Osun 127, Oyo 108, and Ekiti, which is not more than Nasarawa Local Government in Kano, got 93. Altogether, the South-West got 812 slots, more than half of the total number of recruits in the entire country. In the North-West, Kano got only 31, Katsina 20, Jigawa 18, and Zamfara 16. Altogether, the entire region got only about 7 percent of the total number recruited.
