In a recent video shared on Facebook, Alhaji Mujahid Asari Dokubo, the prominent Niger Delta leader and former militant commander, reflected on his life, legacy, and the evolving landscape of leadership in Nigeria.
“At 69, I’m getting closer to transcending this stage of my existence to another level of being,” Dokubo said, offering insight into his personal philosophy and spiritual outlook. He described his age as a time for reflection, growth, and preparing the next generation to take up leadership roles.
Expressing optimism, Dokubo added that he is pleased “that young people are taking over now,” acknowledging the rising influence of younger leaders in activism, politics, and community advocacy. He emphasized that the involvement of youth ensures the continuity of struggles for justice, equity, and the protection of minority communities like the Kalabari and broader Niger Delta.
While reflecting on his personal legacy, Dokubo reaffirmed his commitment to the Kalabari people. “The realms of what the Kalabari people stand for, their beliefs, and the key are in my hands,” he said, underlining his determination to preserve the traditions and autonomy of his people. He also stressed, “I’m not ready to let go of what my father handed over to me,” signaling that despite the rising youth influence, he remains a guardian of his heritage.
Dokubo also critiqued political structures that, in his view, undermine minority groups. He warned that those in power often misuse the Constitution and control of security forces to maintain dominance. “They have the power, the police, everybody is with them,” he said, highlighting the ongoing challenges that persist.
For Dokubo, turning 69 is not just a personal milestone but a moment to observe the transition of leadership, celebrate the energy of younger activists, and ensure that his people’s cultural and political rights remain protected as he gradually steps back from the frontlines.
