Nnamdi Kanu Has Been in Custody for Some Time Now; I Believe He Has Been Held Unjustly – Ned Nwoko

‎According to a report by Punch on Sunday, October 26, 2025, Senator Ned Nwoko called for the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, insisting that his continued detention is unjust and contributes to unrest in the South-East.

The lawmaker representing Delta North said during an interview on Channels Television that peace and stability would return to the region if fairness and equity were prioritised in government actions. “Nnamdi Kanu has been in custody for some time now. I believe that he has been held unjustly,” he said.

Nwoko explained that creating an additional state in the South-East and releasing Kanu would help ease tensions and address long-standing grievances about marginalisation.

He noted that the South-East remains the only region in Nigeria with five states, describing this imbalance as deliberate and unjust.

The senator revealed that he had previously discussed the matter with President Bola Tinubu, urging for fairness and inclusion to reduce insecurity.

His comments come as the National Assembly Joint Committee on Constitution Review recently approved the creation of an additional state for the region, a move Nwoko welcomed as a step toward justice and stability.
