According to a report by The Times Of Israel, the uncle of Tal Haimi, whose body was recently returned by Hamas, recounted the bravery of his nephew and the civil defense team at Kibbutz Nir Yitzhak during the terrorist attack on October 7.
“You fought like a lion with the defense squad, while no one came,” Zamir Haimi told the Kan public broadcaster, highlighting the courage and dedication of Tal and his team in defending their community. The return of Tal’s body has brought “a great mixture of emotions,” he added, noting that 15 other men’s remains are still held by terror groups in the Gaza Strip.
Tal Haimi and his colleagues from the rapid response unit confronted the invading terrorists at the kibbutz entrance, fighting until he was fatally shot. In December 2023, Tal’s family was informed, based on intelligence reports, that he had been killed during the attack and that his body had been taken hostage.
Zamir Haimi expressed his grief and relief on social media, writing, “You’re back home, blue-eyed child. An eternal 41-year-old boy.” He continued, “We succeeded in bringing you home. Home to Ela, Nir, Einav, Udi and Lotan. Home to all the family that was waiting for you. Home to Nir Yitzhak.”
Tal’s legacy lives on through his wife, Ela, and their four children. The youngest, Lotan, was born in May 2024, seven months after Tal’s death, a poignant reminder of the family he never got to see grow up.
The attack on Kibbutz Nir Yitzhak remains a stark example of the risks faced by communities near conflict zones, as well as the courage of those who step forward to protect others. Tal and his civil defense squad’s actions exemplify the resilience and dedication of local defenders confronting extreme danger.
