Human rights activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has strongly condemned the reported arrest and detention of Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, and Kanu’s brother by the Nigeria Police Force.
According to a report by Punch on Monday, October 20, 2025, Sowore described the development as a deliberate move by the authorities to suppress dissenting voices and instill fear among protesters demanding justice and freedom.
In a statement shared by News Central TV on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Sowore expressed outrage over what he termed a misuse of power by law enforcement officers. He revealed that Ejimakor and Kanu’s brother were apprehended in connection with the ongoing FreeNnamdiKanuNow protests in Abuja, which have captured national attention. The activist faulted the police for focusing on arresting protest organisers rather than addressing the genuine grievances raised by Nigerians who have taken to the streets.
“Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, and his brother have been detained by the police,” Sowore stated. “The protest disrupted Abuja, yet law enforcement concentrated on arresting those who organised it. The new man, Dantawaye Miller, is simply trying to please Tinubu and the illegal Inspector General of Police.” He accused the government of weaponising the police to stifle public criticism and prevent Nigerians from exercising their constitutional right to peaceful assembly.
Sowore further urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to respect democratic values by allowing citizens to express themselves freely without intimidation. He noted that the continuous clampdown on activists and protesters reflects a growing pattern of human rights violations under the current government.
“The right to peaceful protest and free speech are fundamental pillars of democracy,” he reiterated. “Any government that fears the voices of its people has lost legitimacy.” Sowore concluded by demanding the immediate release of all detained protesters, warning that continued repression would only deepen public frustration and unrest across the nation.
