According to a video posted on Fox News on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, retired General Jack Keane said Saudi Arabia is willing to let the United States bear the human cost of confronting Iran while avoiding that risk itself.
Keane, a strategic analyst, made the comment while explaining why he believes Saudi Arabia has consistently resisted more aggressive action against Tehran.
Keane said the core issue is that Saudi Arabia is not willing to sacrifice in order to rid the Middle East of Iran’s aggression, despite benefiting from a security and nuclear umbrella provided by the United States since World War II.
He pointed out that Washington once led a coalition to stop Saddam Hussein from seizing Saudi oil fields after Kuwait was invaded, underscoring the depth of the relationship Saudi Arabia has relied on for decades.
In his words, General Jack Keane said, “the Saudis are not willing to sacrifice to rid the Middle East region of Iran’s aggression.
“That is the absolute fact that we are seeing playing out here. What do I mean by sacrifice? Casualties and damage to some of their oil reserves.
“That’s the reality. They are willing for us to make that sacrifice for sure and willing for Israel to make that sacrifice for sure.”
Keane said this pattern extends beyond military matters, noting that despite Saudi Arabia’s government killing a journalist, the Trump administration has maintained close ties with the kingdom.
He called it troubling that Saudi Arabia continues to avoid direct confrontation with Iran while relying on American and Israeli forces to absorb the consequences.
