Morayo Afolabi Brown has opened up about her father’s fearless fight against military rule in Nigeria, revealing that he was one of former military ruler Ibrahim Babangida’s biggest enemies.
Speaking during a recent interview on Jay On Air TV, Morayo said her father was a well-known activist who stood firmly against Babangida’s government. She explained that Babangida disliked her father so much that he was often targeted and harassed because of his outspoken activism.
According to her, her father was jailed multiple times and shared prison cells with other pro-democracy fighters, including the late human rights lawyer Beko Ransome-Kuti. She said the pressure eventually became too much, forcing her father to flee Nigeria and live in exile to escape being hunted down by the regime.
Morayo also revealed that growing up as the daughter of such a bold activist shaped her own life. She said her father never stopped speaking out, even using social media daily to share his views before he passed. She credited him with pushing the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, to become more vocal and active in its stance against military interference in the country.
In her words, “My father was an activist; I grew up, he was one of Babangida’s number one enemies. Babangida hated the guy with passion. My father was sleeping in Prison with Beko Ransome-Kuti and all others. He had to go into exile because he was being chased by Babangida.
