A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dan Ulasi, has defended his decision to support Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC)presidential candidate Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 general election, insisting that it is his constitutional right as a Nigerian.
Ulasi made the remarks on Friday while appearing as a guest on the Arise News Morning Show, where he discussed the state of the PDP, the growing divisions within the opposition, and political realignments ahead of the next presidential election.
According to him, he had earlier advised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, that his public declaration of support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid came too early.
Ulasi said he conveyed his position directly to Wike during their last meeting, arguing that the political atmosphere had not matured enough at the time for such an endorsement.
He further stated that the individual who eventually emerged as the PDP’s presidential candidate does not possess the qualities required to effectively challenge and defeat Tinubu in the 2027 election.
Explaining his own political stance, Ulasi argued that if Wike, a prominent PDP leader, could openly support Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), there should be nothing wrong with his own decision to back Peter Obi.
“If Wike is supporting Tinubu, I’m supporting Peter Obi. It’s my right as a Nigerian,” Ulasi said.
The PDP chieftain maintained that every Nigerian has the freedom to support any candidate of their choice, stressing that his backing of Obi is a personal political decision.
Ulasi’s comments come amid increasing political alignments and internal disagreements within the PDP as parties and influential politicians begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
