2015: When We Asked Buhari About Tinubu, He Told Us ‘This Man Told Me He’s Not Running.’—Okechukwu

Osita Okechukwu, a foundational member of the ruling All Progressives Congress, recalled how Muhammadu Buhari and Bola Tinubu worked together during the APC’s 2015 emergence, describing their cooperation as critical to building party unity before the presidential election.

According to a video posted on the official YouTube channel of Arise News on Monday, July 20, 2026, while discussing APC formation, Okechukwu recounted internal conversations involving Buhari, Tinubu, and party loyalists before crucial decisions were finalized politically.

He said some party members questioned Tinubu’s intentions during sensitive discussions, but Buhari remained confident, insisting that Tinubu had assured him he would not seek the presidential ticket then, easing concerns within the emerging coalition leadership at once.

During the interview, he stated, “in 2015, we formed the APC, and luckily, what Atiku did years earlier was what President Tinubu also did. When some elements in Buhari’s camp, of which I was a member, were saying, ‘sir, we don’t know what Tinubu is doing. Do you trust him?’ Buhari gave a simple response. During a crucial meeting at his residence on Aso Drive, he told us, ‘if you’re doubting him, this man told me he is not running.’”

He explained that Buhari’s confidence reassured party members during an important period, adding that trust between key political figures helped the coalition overcome uncertainty before the presidential primary and eventually strengthened the APC’s internal organization nationwide.

Okechukwu further maintained that Tinubu fulfilled commitments made during preparations for the party convention, arguing that those actions demonstrated loyalty to the coalition’s broader objective rather than personal ambition, according to his account during the discussion.
