According to reports by TheCable on Saturday, May 23, 2026, human rights activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore has officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Sowore, who previously served as the presidential candidate for the African Action Congress (AAC) during the 2023 general election, made this public declaration during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today program on Friday.
The activist confirmed that the African Action Congress is scheduled to conduct its party primaries next week, though he declined to state definitively whether he would emerge as the party’s sole candidate.
Expressing his resolve regarding the upcoming contest, Sowore confidently told viewers, “I am running to win.”
He argued that the current political climate in Nigeria requires a transition toward leadership driven by innovative ideas, asserting that the existing political parties are fundamentally equivalent in their inability to solve the nation’s pressing challenges.
Sowore stated that his decision to run stems from his belief that the country is currently facing unprecedented hardships, noting that “Nigeria is in bigger trouble” today than it was in previous election cycles.
He explicitly criticized President Bola Tinubu and other major opposition figures, claiming that the policies and leadership styles of these established politicians are directly responsible for the cycles of poverty, insecurity, and national distress currently plaguing the citizenry.
By positioning himself as a systemic alternative to the mainstream political establishment, Sowore aims to offer Nigerians what he describes as a genuine opportunity for governance reform and social accountability.
As the political landscape begins to shape up for the 2027 polls, Sowore remains focused on advocating for a leadership model that prioritizes the welfare of the ordinary Nigerian over the interests of the political elite.
The candidate’s announcement marks another significant development in the early maneuvers of Nigeria’s 2027 general election cycle…See More
