According to a report by Daily Post on Monday May 11, 2026, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has reflected on the Nigerian Civil War, saying it was a conflict that should never have happened in the first place.

Speaking in Abeokuta on Monday, Obasanjo looked back on his role during the 1967–1970 war and described the experience as deeply painful, stressing that civil wars force citizens of the same country into battle against one another.

According to him, conflicts within a nation are fundamentally different from wars against foreign enemies because, in the end, those fighting are still bound by a shared identity and history. He noted that the goal in such situations should always be reconciliation and national unity rather than destruction.

“We shouldn’t have fought ourselves. Civil war is different from fighting external enemies because at the end of the day, you are fighting your brothers,” Obasanjo said.

The former military commander also urged Nigerians to learn from the tragedy of the war and place greater emphasis on peace, dialogue and coexistence so the country does not return to a similar crisis again….See More
