Muhammad Sanusi II has stated that joining a union should be a voluntary decision for workers, and private companies should not be forced to subject their businesses to union control. He argued that if a driver wants to join a union, they should work for a company that allows it, while those who choose not to join unions should be free to work for companies like Dangote.
On News Central TV, Sanusi compared the situation to private schools setting their own fees, where parents who cannot afford those fees choose different schools rather than forcing the private institution to change its policies. He stated that threatening the entire country with a strike over a dispute between a union and a private company is the most irresponsible thing he has seen regarding the economy.
Muhammad Sanusi II said: “I do not know the details of the conflict between him and the unions. What I know is that joining a union is a voluntary thing. If a driver wants to join a union, then he should go and join and work for a company that allows its drivers to join unions. If a driver chooses not to be part of a union and work for Dangote, he should go and work for Dangote. I do not think anyone should stop a private company. If you have a private school and you say these are your fees, if people cannot pay those fees, they go to a school where they have lower fees. You cannot tell people who have invested privately that they should subject their business to the whims and caprices of a union. I think it is wrong.
