I Served The Army For 35 Years; The Army Made Me Who I Am Today, I Have Respect For It’ – Major General Umar Mohammed

Major General Umar Mohammed has expressed personal dissatisfaction with the current approach of military personnel engaging in negotiations with armed bandits. The retired general, who served the Nigerian Army for 35 years, stated that he has tremendous respect for the institution that made him who he is, but he is deeply unhappy with what he is currently witnessing.

On TrustTV, Major General Mohammed acknowledged the army’s desire to speedily bring the situation under control and restore peace, but firmly stated that the current approach is fundamentally wrong. He urged the military high command to reconsider this strategy, emphasizing that the armed forces are trained to use force and that subduing bandits before negotiations should be the proper sequence of operations.

Retired Major General Umar Mohammed said: “As a retired general, I have served the army for 35 years. I have a lot of respect for the army. The army made me who I am and I know what the army has taught us. And I know the level the army has gone in trying to maintain peace and keep the country together. I am not happy with what I am seeing and I wish to urge the military high command to look at it. I know we want peace and the army speedily wants to bring everything in order, but I can just tell you that for us, we are actually trained to use force. That is why I am of the view that let us use the force first. Let us be able to make them to come. This approach will not yield good result in future. I am not in favor of this approach.
