‎If Jonathan Throws His Hat Into The Ring, I Will Be Surprised, It Would Be A Very Big Matter—Okorie

‎According to a report by Leadership, on Friday May 8, 2026, former Chekwas Okorie has expressed doubt over the possibility of former President Goodluck Jonathan returning to contest the 2027 presidential election, saying the political situation surrounding him is more complex than many assume.

Okorie stated that Jonathan’s reported consultations about a possible comeback do not automatically translate into a realistic or smooth political return, he argued that the former president’s path back into the race is unclear, especially given current party dynamics in the country.

‎He noted that Jonathan remains a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, but said the party is still facing internal disputes, according to him, it is uncertain whether Jonathan would leave the party that once brought him to power or attempt to contest under a platform that is still dealing with leadership and court-related issues.

‎Okorie questioned whether a return to partisan politics aligns with Jonathan’s present status as an international statesman, he said the former president has gained global respect since leaving office and should carefully consider whether re-entering electoral politics would affect that reputation and the image he has built over the years.

‎He further warned that electoral regulations could create additional barriers, according to him, party registration deadlines set by electoral authorities may make it difficult for anyone who joins late to qualify for a presidential ticket and added that such administrative rules could seriously affect any last-minute political realignment in Nigeria.

‎“I’ve not seen it to know the context in which he said that, because I am aware that he may not be favourably disposed to contesting. Which party will he use to contest? If he throws his hat into the ring, I will be surprised. It would be a very big matter. I don’t know what to make of it,” he said….See More
