Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has dismissed the notion that being in the opposition requires a total rejection of every government policy. Speaking during a recent interview, the former Rivers State Governor argued that political maturity involves recognizing effective leadership when it is evident. He insisted that the true essence of opposition is offering constructive alternatives rather than engaging in perpetual, blind criticism.
According to a video posted on the Official YouTube channel of TVC News, while addressing the allegations that the ruling party is attempting to stifle other political platforms, Nyesom Wike stated, “it would be stupid of me to say the government has done nothing just because I am opposition.” He emphasized that such a mindset is foolhardy and fails to serve the greater interest of the nation.
The Minister pointed to the removal of the fuel subsidy as a prime example of a difficult but necessary decision that previous administrations avoided. He noted that although many agreed the subsidy was a scam, only the current leadership possessed the political will to end it. Wike explained that this move has significantly increased the revenue available to the states for critical grassroots developmental projects.
Wike further clarified that his support for specific policies does not mean he has abandoned his political identity or his party, the PDP. He argued that the definition of opposition in Nigeria has been wrongly interpreted as a mandate to claim the government never does anything right. Instead, he believes in acknowledging progress while pushing for better implementation and accountability from those currently in power today.
In his concluding remarks, Nyesom Wike urged Nigerians to move away from politics of bitterness and embrace a system based on facts and performance. He maintained that his primary loyalty remains with the people and their peace, rather than joining what he described as coalitions born out of greed. He vowed to continue fighting for his convictions regardless of the intimidation or the political labels involved…See More
