I Asked Why Are We Using Concrete & Not Asphalt, Umahi Said Because This Would Last Longer -Showunmi

Former Ogun State governorship aspirant, Segun Showunmi, has praised the ongoing Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, which was initiated by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Speaking during an interview with Arise News Television on Monday, Showunmi expressed optimism about the project, describing it as a remarkable vision by the current administration that is likely to be completed on schedule.

He revealed that he had been invited by the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, to inspect the ongoing construction of the coastal road at a section in Lagos State.

“Dave Umahi changed his mind and said wouldn’t it even be okay if I came to Lagos to look at the coastal road since he has been aware that I have been screaming about the Sokoto-Badagry road because of its significant importance. I said why not, we could do that.”

Showunmi stated that upon arriving at the site, he took the opportunity to express his curiosity about several aspects of the project. He noted that he asked the Minister of Works some tough questions, which were met with thoughtful and convincing responses.

“The scale of that project is such that I asked all the hard questions. I asked why are we using concrete and not asphalt, the Minister (Umahi) said because this would last longer. Once you build it, it gives you a guarantee of about 100 years and you wouldn’t have to go back to do it again.”

Additionally, Showunmi shared his observations about the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, noting that although it is being referred to as a road project, it appears to be more aligned with the construction of bridges due to its complex and large-scale design.
