The Federal Government has announced that over nine million Nigerian households received a total of ₦675 billion within three months under the HoPE-CT cash transfer programme, part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda.

Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Bernard Doro, disclosed that the funds were disbursed nationwide, including ₦9.9 billion allocated to beneficiaries in Ondo State.

According to official statements and recent reports from the ministry, the cash transfers were designed to cushion the effects of economic hardship and support vulnerable families across the country.

The HoPE-CT programme forms part of the administration’s broader social protection strategy aimed at addressing poverty and stabilising households affected by rising living costs and economic reforms.

Minister Doro said the programme reached approximately nine million households within a three-month period, describing it as one of the largest direct support interventions currently being implemented by the government.

He maintained that the initiative reflects the Tinubu administration’s commitment to delivering targeted financial relief to Nigerians most in need. The ₦9.9 billion reportedly disbursed in Ondo State was cited as part of efforts to ensure equitable distribution across states.

The announcement, however, has been met with widespread public skepticism.

Many Nigerians reacting on social media questioned the transparency of the process and called on the government to publish a comprehensive list of beneficiaries.

Several users claimed they had not seen evidence of the funds reaching people in their communities, with some asking for clearer breakdowns of how recipients were selected and verified.

Critics argue that while cash transfer programmes are not new in Nigeria, public trust remains low due to past controversies surrounding social intervention schemes.

They insist that greater transparency, including verifiable data and independent oversight, would help build confidence in the initiative. Others noted that the scale of the reported disbursement—₦675 billion within three months—makes accountability even more crucial.

Supporters of the programme, on the other hand, say large-scale cash transfers are necessary given the current economic realities, including inflation and subsidy reforms that have increased living costs.

They argue that social protection measures are globally recognised tools for poverty reduction and economic stabilisation when properly implemented.

The HoPE-CT initiative comes amid broader efforts by the Federal Government to expand social safety nets and mitigate the impact of ongoing economic reforms.
