Comrade Emmanuel Nnadozie Onwubiko, the National Coordinator of the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), has stated that the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan is not fit to remain in his current position and must vacate the office without delay.
Speaking in an interview with SYMFONI on Monday, April 20, 2026, Onwubiko warned that the Chairman’s refusal to step down could ignite a massive uprising across the country.
He noted that the demand for his exit has moved beyond a mere dispute between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and African Democratic Congress (ADC), evolving into a broader struggle between the Nigerian populace and individuals he characterized as oppressors who cling to power despite lacking a positive vision for the nation.
Onwubiko said, “Amupitan should leave immediately. He shouldn’t wait for ADC to ask him to leave because he is going to create uprising in Nigeria. It is not even about APC and ADC, it is now about Nigerians and oppressors who wants to remain in Nigeria when they don’t have anything to offer.”
The controversy centers on a digital footprint from the 2023 general elections, long before Amupitan’s appointment to the commission.
A tweet allegedly traced to his account during that period boldly declared that victory was sure for the APC.
This resurfaced evidence has led many to question his capacity for neutrality as an electoral umpire.
Critics argue that such a public display of partisan loyalty disqualifies him from overseeing the nation’s democratic processes, as it undermines the fundamental principle of impartiality.
Civil rights groups and political stakeholders have intensified their pressure, asserting that the integrity of the 2027 electoral cycle is at stake….See More
