In a recent interview on News Central TV, Dennis Oyakhire, an APC chieftain, spoke on the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral system ahead of the 2027 general elections and ongoing debates surrounding the role of the electoral umpire.
During the interview, Oyakhire stated, “Amupitan alone will not sit in Abuja and decide the electoral outcome in the whole nation.” He used the statement to push back against growing concerns that the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Joash Amupitan, could influence election results unilaterally.
He explained that Nigeria’s electoral process is not centralized in the hands of one individual, stressing that multiple institutional safeguards, technological systems, and legal frameworks are in place to ensure transparency and accountability during elections.
Oyakhire maintained that the idea of a single person determining national electoral outcomes does not reflect how the system operates, noting that elections involve multiple layers of administration from polling units to collation centers across the country.
He further argued that criticism directed at the INEC leadership often ignores the structural complexity of Nigeria’s democratic process, where results are determined through a decentralized system involving various stakeholders.
The APC chieftain also urged political actors and opposition groups to focus on strengthening their internal organization and voter engagement strategies rather than concentrating on allegations against electoral officials.
