A diplomat and former permanent secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Joe Keshi, has criticized what he described as inconsistencies and recklessness in US President Donald Trump’s approach to military engagement, particularly regarding Iran.
In an interview on Signature TV, Keshi challenged the coherence of Trump’s foreign policy decisions and his treatment of international allies.
“The same Trump, a few months ago, decided that he was going to use the heaviest, the most sophisticated American military arsenal and he was boasting that nobody has that kind of thing and he was boasting of the obliteration, that they have obliterated Iranian nuclear capability,” Keshi recounted.
The former diplomat then highlighted what he saw as contradictory subsequent actions. “And then a few months later, Netanyahu came back and then because he heard Israel was going to attack some of these other facilities, he decided to get involved. This is a man who actually confessed that he has sent some of the best American warships to that region and the Iranians are not moving,” Keshi stated.
He then posed critical questions about Trump’s decision-making process. “So the question you should ask yourself, you should ask your colleagues, your advisers: in a situation like this, do you think it’s right for us to go to war? You did not consult your allies. You did not even seek the advice of your allies, not even your Congress,” the ambassador said.
Keshi concluded by criticizing Trump’s rhetoric toward allied nations. “And now you are abusing the same allies that they are cowards,” he observed.
The remarks reflect concern among Nigerian diplomats about what they perceive as unpredictable and unilateral American foreign policy under Trump, particularly as Nigeria navigates its own relationship with the United States amid security cooperation discussions….See More
