Former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has accused those around former President Muhammadu Buhari of frustrating electoral reforms, according to a report by Punch on Thursday, October 2, 2025.
He said the same people who stopped Buhari from signing the reform bill are now pretending to support changes ahead of the 2027 elections.
Amaechi spoke during the National Political Dialogue on Electoral Reforms, organised virtually to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary.
He warned that citizens should not expect genuine reforms from leaders who once resisted them.
According to him, those who blocked Buhari from signing the reform bill are now the loudest voices demanding change.
He questioned their sincerity, asking why Nigerians should believe they will allow reforms now when they refused in the past.
Amaechi described the present National Assembly as the weakest he had ever seen.
He argued that it lacked the courage and independence needed to deliver real reforms.
He explained that politicians often fear reforms that give voters power to remove them from office.
For this reason, he said leaders are unwilling to pass laws that make elections truly transparent.
Instead, they prefer to keep a weak system that allows them to stay in power.
Amaechi stressed that it is not enough for politicians to talk about reforms at public events.
He said genuine reform requires patriotism and sacrifice, not self-interest.
He insisted that only citizens can force change, according to him, politicians will never willingly reform a process that guarantees their control.
He urged Nigerians to demand accountability and push for reforms that strengthen democracy.
Amaechi warned that without strong reforms, the 2027 elections may face the same credibility challenges as past polls.
He said reforms must include transparent processes that restore voter confidence.
”The same people who stopped Buhari from signing electoral reform bill are now the ones shouting for reform. So, what makes you think those in power will agree to it? When the current National Assembly is the worst I have ever seen,” he said.Continue, Full, Reading>>>>.
