Bury Your Mother Then Come Back to Your Cell: El-Rufai Returns to ICPC Custody

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai returned to the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission on March 31, 2026, after a temporary release granted to allow him attend his mother’s burial. The brief compassionate leave ended as scheduled, and El-Rufai reported back to the commission’s custody while investigations into alleged financial misconduct during his two terms as governor between 2015 and 2023 continue.

The ICPC has accused El-Rufai of financial irregularities that include an estimated ten billion naira in unaccounted funds linked to his tenure in Kaduna.
