Human rights lawyer and public affairs analyst Chidi Odinkalu has reacted strongly to a viral video showing residents of an Osun community forcing a police officer to kneel in uniform, describing the development as part of a troubling pattern in the country.
The reaction came via a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), where Odinkalu weighed in on the incident, linking it to a similar controversy from the previous week. The video, which has circulated widely online, captures tense moments between community members and the officer, sparking debates about authority, justice, and public conduct.
Referencing the incident, Odinkalu wrote, “It’s like it is kneel down season in Nigeria now? Last week it was a judge telling a lawyer to kneel down for tear gassing them during Ilobu-Erin-Osun conflict. This week, it is a community in Osun ordering an officer of @PoliceNG to kneel down in his uniform. Not excusing teargassing a community over land dispute but kneel down.?!”
He continued by reiterating his concern over the normalization of such actions, emphasizing that while grievances may exist, the method of expressing them raises questions about respect for institutions and the rule of law. “This week, it is a community in Osun ordering an officer of @PoliceNG to kneel down in his uniform.
